Powerboat Instructor Course

The Next Course will take place in September 2010

Eligibilty

Candidates should have logged at least five seasons' experience OR if candidates are using powerboats as an integral part of their normal full-time occupation, this period is reduced to one season.  All preferably in a range of boat types and sizes.

Candidates will hold the RYA's Level 2 Powerboat Certificate and a valid First Aid Certificate (either the RYA's First Aid certificate or one approved by the Health and Safety Executive, covering the treatment of hypothermia and a minimum of six hours in length).  No candidate under the age of 16 will be accepted for training.

Prior to the Instructor Training Course, candidates must attend a skills assessment, details of which can be found on the RYA website.

Training - Candidates will attend a three day Instructor Course run by an RYA Powerboat Trainer and assessed by an independent Trainer.  


Dinghy Instructor Course

Our dinghy coaching courses are very popular.  We have a wealth of experience in running all levels of dinghy sailing programs.  With this experience, our RYA Coaches ensure you get the very best instructor training. 

We also offer a 2 day course to enable you to hone your skills prior to taking the Pre-Entry Assessment.  Please contact us for details.

This course is five days of intensive but enjoyable training in all aspects of teaching beginners and improvers to sail, including moderation by another coach at the end of the course. Our coaches will make sure you pick up top tips and new ideas. Please make sure you have read a current copy of G14, G4 and G11 before the course and remember to bring these with you. (Available from RYA website www.rya.org.uk)

Please note that you should come to the course having completed your pre-entry assessment. If you have not completed the pre-entry assessment then this can be arranged but will probably take place approximately a week before or on special circumstances can be arranged as 1:1 tuition.

Other pre-requisites are:

Over 16 years old
Hold at least RYA Powerboat Level 2 Certificate
Hold a valid First Aid Certificate


Pre-Assessment Dinghy Instructor

 
All candidates for Dinghy Instructor must pass this practical sailing test prior to attending the Dinghy Instructor course.   Should you require the 2 days Pre-Assessment training course the outline of the course is as follows:

The first day will be spent on practising and improving skills so that you should be able to complete the pre-entry assessment on the second day, weather permitting.  An optimum wind strength of 11 knots to undertake the assessment is required.

 

Should you require to go straight for the Pre-Assessment, this will take half a day.

Advanced Instructor

The next Advanced Instructor Course will take place TBA

Eligibility

Candidates must hold the RYA Dinghy Instructor Certificate and will usually have recorded at least one season's experience of teaching sailing since qualifying.

Candidates will be skilled to at least the level of the Performance Sailing and Sailing with Spinnakers courses and should have previous powerboat handling experience in a teaching environment.

Training

This is a two day course covering the teaching a boat handling, the use of spinnakers and 5 essentials coaching to the required standard, as well as powerboat driving.

Assessment

Candidates will be assessed on a continuous basis afloat, and may be given a theory test. Upon successful completion of the course, the Coach/Assessor will sign their logbooks.


Race Instructor

The Next Race Instructor Course will take place TBA

Eligibility

Dinghy instructor trainees who have experience of club racing (minimum completed 9 races and assistant race officer role once) may qualify during their instructor training course. Alternatively qualified dinghy instructors may undertake further training at a later date with a Coach/Assessor.

Training

The course will include the organisation of club racing, preparation and management of the Start Racing course and instructional techniques afloat including the use of race training exercises. On successful competion, the candidates logbook will be signed by the Coach/Assessor.


Senior Instructor Course

The next Senior Instructor Course Spring 2011

This 4 day course marks the transition from managing your own boat to that of being a 'fleet manager'. The senior instructor course concentrates primarily on on-the-water issues and is practically orientated. Mylor Sailing School is the perfect venue, due to its superb location in the Carrick Roads and wide variety of courses and equipment.

The course includes supervising instructors under your control, practical teaching afloat, fleet management, running shore-based sessions, customer liaison and group discussions under the guidance of one of our very experienced dinghy coach-assessors. Continuous assessment (in a relaxed atmosphere) is based on your ability to plan, organise and run practical sessions, construct course programmes, manage instructors under your supervision and give your input to shore-based sessions.

Eligibility: You must fully meet the RYA's pre-course criteria (see handbook G14 available from RYA website www.rya.org.uk) and include a written recommendation from the principal of an RYA teaching centre, evidence of two seasons intermittent sailing instruction or one year full-time, a current first aid award and the RYA Safety Boat qualification (this 2 day course can be arranged, please contact us for more information). A pre-course workbook available from the RYA website or Mylor Sailing School needs to be completed before the course.


Keelboat Instructor Endorsement


The next Keelboat Instructor Course will take place in TBA

Eligibility:

Prior to the course candidates must fulfil the following requirements:

Minimum age 16;

Valid first aid certificate: either the RYA first aid course or one recognised by the Health and Safety Executive, covering the treatment of hypothermia and a minimum of six hours course length;

RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate;

This 2 day course includes a pre-entry assessment of your keelboat sailing skills and a conversion of teaching techniques from dinghies to keelboats using our J24.

Pre-course experience: RYA dinghy instructor with experience of keelboat sailing.
