RYA Powerboat
The RYA’s National Powerboat Scheme is for those who use small, open powerboats for leisure or work, whether for their own sake or in connection with another activity such as sailing or rescue.
Examples of boats relevant to this scheme are sportsboats, RIBs, dories and launches which do not normally provide accommodation or cooking facilities.
Powerboating is a fantastic sport with styles of boat to suit everyone. Participation is increasing all the time with powerboating now standing out as a sport in its own right and our training scheme acknowledges the tremendous advances in boats, equipment and people’s aspirations.
The scheme comprises a series of practical courses which can be complemented by our navigation courses and other one-day support courses. Use them simply to increase your knowledge and confidence, or as a progression to the RYA/MCA Certificates of Competence which are recognised by maritime authorities worldwide.
Most courses take place over two days. By taking your course at an RYA Recognised Training Centre you can expect to be taught by an experienced, qualified instructor on seaworthy boats with a maximum of three trainees. Courses can be taken either onboard a centre’s boat or your own boat.
You can enter the scheme at any level, provided that you have the correct level experience beforehand. Be realistic when assessing your current experience and abilities and, if in doubt, discuss your requirements with us before booking your course.
Children aged between 8 and 11 are able to take the Level 1 course, and once they are 12 they can take the Level 2 course. Their certificates will be endorsed to show that they must use boats only under the supervision of a responsible adult.
Brief details of each course follow.
The Level 1 Course
This one-day course covers basic boat handling, safety and theory.
The Level 2 Course
This two-day course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence. It includes Close quarters handling, high speed manoeuvres, man overboard recovery and collision regulations. The course can be taken inland or on the coast and your certificate will be endorsed accordingly.
The Safety Boat Course
This two-day course provides the skills required when acting as an escort craft, safety boat or coach boat for a fleet of dinghies, windsurfers or canoes, and for racing or training activities. Prior to the course you will need to hold the RYA Level 2 Powerboat certificate.
